Easter Week in Seville 2018
Next Sunday, March 25th. will be again Palm Sunday.
The Brotherhood of “La Paz” is the first one to go out in Procession during the Easter Week in Seville.
During the whole Week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday every afternoon you can see the Processions on the streets going to the Cathedral for doing a ” Penance Station”.
Every brotherhood carries magnificent “Pasos” or floats with sculptures that depict different scenes related to the Passion of Christ or the Sorrows of Virgin Mary.
The Origins of the Easter Week.
The origin of the Easter Week in Seville goes back to the XVIth. Century. The Marquis of Tarifa stablished a “Via Crucis” from his Palace to a small chapel outside the city walls call the “Cruz del Campo”
At the same time the Counter Reformation of the Catholic Church will have a big impact in the creation of the Easter Week in Seville.
Locals as well as tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy a life baroque performance around the streets of the City Center.
The most important days are Thursday and Friday. During the day men and women, the women dress in mourning and wearing the traditional Mantilla, visit the different churches.
In the afternoon everyone takes a break in one of the many cafeterias to taste the delicious “torrijas”, the tipycal treats of this time of the year.
During the “Madrugá”, the night from Thursday to Friday, go out some of the most popular brotherhoods in the City. The Macarena, Triana, Gran Poder, etc.
