TRIANA FESTIVAL “VELÁ DE SANTA ANA”

The Triana Festival “Velá de Santa Ana” is one of the oldest festivals celebrated in the city.

Its origins go back to the Middle Ages. In the 13th. Century, the King Alfonso X, known as “The Wise”, after recovering from an eye illness, order the construction of the Church dedicated to Saint Ana, the Mother of the Virgin Mary.

Already from the 13th Century a pilgrimage was celebrated on the eve of Saint Anne´s Day.

The elders used to spend the night in the Church while the young ones will go near the G. river, where it was nice and cool to celebrate, sing and dance all night long.

The Triana Quarter, where the Gypsies used to live until the 1950´s has a long tradition of Flamenco Art. During this Triana Festival live Flamenco Shows are performed at the Altozano Square.

The Cucaña ,a greasy pole on a boat on the River, one of the biggest attractions of this Triana Festival  for the youngsters, was introduced in 1910.
