Fernando III, King of Castilla and León
During the reign of Fernando III, the Saint, the Reconquest of the kingdoms of Jaén, Córdoba, Seville and part of Badajoz took place.
On November 23, 1248 after a long siege of the city, finally the troops of King Fernando III, the Saint, reconquered the city of Seville.
The king dies in the Alcázar of Seville on May 30, 1252. His son Alfonso X, the Wise, makes a description of the death of his father that inspires the magnificent painting of Virgilio Mattoni that we can see today in the “Casa de Contratación” (Chamber of Comerce) in the Alcázar.
He will be buired in the Cathedral of Seville, at the foot of the image of the Virgin of the Kings, as he had requested.
After the death of the King begins to generate in the city of Seville a spititual energy thath attracts the faithful Sevillians for centuries.
In the XVII century ,Bartolomé Esteban Murillo among other important figures of the city at this time, will be in charge of collecting paintings of Fernando III since his death, in wich he already appears with the halo of holiness, in order to obtain his canonization.
On February 7, 1671 , we has canonized by Pope Clement X. From this moment on the festivity of Fernando III the Saint is celebrated every year on May 30.
This day the Sevillians have the opportunity to contemplate the incorrupt body of San Fernando, Patron Saint of the city.
